When Encounters Become Memories

By Leow Chee Seng, Advisor, Humanology

We always think that the days are still long, always talk about the next time we see each other, but we don’t know that the fate of this world is like the fall leaves in autumn, when the wind blows, we can never go back to the beginning. Those people who used to walk together, those faces that passed by, may not be able to meet again after a normal farewell. An unintentional turn, an unanswered message, or even just a sentence that we didn’t have time to say seriously, may make each other’s fate disappear.

The streets we used to walk together, the scenery we saw together, eventually became fragments of memories, and the people who walked together have long disappeared in the vast sea of people. The Buddha said, the origin is emptiness, all things in the world gather and leave, all have their cause and effect. We don’t have to be too sad for farewell, but we have to cherish every moment when we have it, because every encounter is a precious gift given by life, and every farewell is the most genuine reminder of impermanence.

Life is like a reverse wheel, you and I are all pedestrians, since we can’t predict which side is the last, why don’t we fill our time with compassion and love when we can meet again, so that even when it’s time to say goodbye, we can face it with no regrets in our hearts. Remember, true cherishing is not being persistent forever, but making every moment worth remembering.
